We Heart Hawaii

Posted by Isla on Aug 28, 2009 in Delights

Happy Aloha Friday! Just love these vintage Hawaii art prints on wood….love that they’re on wood! We can actually print any of Kaypee’s art on wood also…his new vintage Diamond Head would be gorgeous on that texture.

Nature in Full Scale

Posted by Isla on Aug 27, 2009 in Finds

I saw this photographer, Nick Brandt recently mentioned in the latest Vanity Fair and just wanted to be sure i shared with everyone. Imagine a massive one of these photographs in a real modern, loft type space, all white and gray with maybe just a pop of a color. Or in a room done all in sepia tones – neutrals, creams, rustic leather, chocolate, caramel, and then having this black and white pop somewhere on a back wall…thrilling!

Kaypee’s Inspiration

Posted by Isla on Aug 26, 2009 in So'mace Lifestyle

We wanted to share with everyone some of Kaypee Soh’s inspiration – works and artists he’s found profound and influential in some way. He’s loved and been involved with graphic design almost his entire life, drawn to cities such as Paris, London, Toronto and New York for their grit, honesty and all round colorful display of human expression and interpretation.

While Kaypee draws much of his inspiration for his work from nature, an artist does draw from many different levels and so without further ado, enjoy the glimpse below…

Matthew Williamson – Kaypee has friends all throughout the fashion industry, both in Europe and here in the States. Together they keep up a watchful eye on fashion/runway/couture/designer trends and know how to interpret the glory of high fashion surrealism, into everyday living inspiration. One of Kaypee’s all time favorite fashion designers is Matthew Williamson. His designs are filled with bold pops of color, clean lines and often quirky prints.

New York City – What really can i say about New York City!! Having lived there himself for more than seven years, NYC was and is a constant stream of stimulation and diversity. Filled with color, culture and cutting edge innovation, Kaypee found his muse for some time in the city itself. He still finds inspiration there, through friends, colleagues and memories of his own…

Russel Wright – Kaypee has been collecting Russel Wright for years and years now. When i first met him, one of the first things we talked about was his Russel Wright collection he has beautifully stowed at home, elegantly displayed and organized in an old armoire in his office.  Mostly known for his “American modern” ceramics, Wright was an ingenious industrial designer during the early 20th century. Known for his elegant color palettes and gracious curves, his pieces today remain classics and are widly collected around the world. I think Kaypee has more than 100 of his pieces.

Teresa Teng – When Kaypee is in his creative mode, working on new product and design, be rest assured the Chinese singer and musician Teresa Teng is playing in the background. There isn’t one piece of work Kaypee has designed where Teng was NOT playing in the background! I didn’t believe it when he first told me that, but it’s true. She’s the soothing, ‘white noise’ he needs during his creative mode and finds it hard to concentrate without her. What a relationship huh!

Nature – We all can see in Kaypee’s work, the reference to flora, fauna, wildlife and nature in general. Having grown up in Malaysia, he was surrounded by the beauty of the natural environment and still feels that connection even now. Living here in Hawaii, he often reflects back on his life growing up in a similar tropical climate, where animals, birds, sea life, fruits, flowers, greens all live abundantly and harmoniously together.

Falling Water – One of Frank Loyd Wright’s greatest works, Falling Water brings everything Kaypee believes in, together. Simple, modern, innovative and most importantly, melding nature with everyday living, it is a masterpiece and one Kaypee will never forget seeing.
