Mary Emmerling

Posted by Isla on Jul 31, 2009 in Books

I was at Barnes and Noble last weekend and found some really fun design books. We’re slowly trying to collect as many as we can for the store but one called ‘Mary Emmerling’s Beach Cottages’ was one of my favorites. I wish i had some images to prove it, hopefully we’ll have the book here at So’mace soon! I Googled her and found this little interview she did with GlamNest…just thought it would be fun to share with fellow beach lovers…

Happy Aloha Friday by the way!

JK: What do you love most about living in a beach cottage?
ME: I love the freshness of it: the ocean smells and breezes; the flowers and produce in the summer; and sunsets enjoyed with friends.

JK: What do you consider the essential elements of a beach house?
ME: I love slipcovers, white ironstone, blue and white fabrics, natural materials such as rattan and sisal, candles, and breezy curtains.

JK: I love the touches of humor in your decorating. How do you keep a room fun?
ME: Don’t take decorating too seriously and surround yourself with fun things—like beach balls, colorful jewelry, and family photos that make you smile. Also, look in your closet for unexpected decorating accessories; beach bags, straw hats, and sarongs add great color and style.

Pantone Fabric

Posted by Isla on Jul 31, 2009 in Delights

Because we design our own pillows, knowing how the colors we pick for them work with each other is beyond essential. Looking through a regular Pantone paint book just isn’t good enough, because the application is much different. Kaypee and Edward had come up with the idea to print out every Pantone color onto the same kind of linen we use for all our pillows. Genius idea i know. We have a massive bolt of hundreds (maybe thousands, feels like it!) of little squares, 60″ wide by about 5yds long. Only problem is that it really only works as well as it can if each square is loose. Which means….between the three of us, at some point in the near future, each tiny square has to be cut out, including it’s special # and then grouped together. We have started this process, but it is for sure just a start. But it is beautiful and we did use the process all together for the first time last night helping with Kaypee’s new pillow collection.

Just thought it would be fun to share, i don’t think i’ve seen this idea anywhere before!

A very nice young lady came in last night and ordered these three Kaypee photographs below. She came in last night and they’re ready to go today, custom crop and size and all! Just thought i’d share with you all because they’re so fun together and they’re also a unique size. It was such a satisfying feeling to be able to get her exactly what she wanted, in such a short amount of time. Great experience for us all!

Cozy Corners

Posted by Isla on Jul 30, 2009 in Delights

Just some pretty little beach inspired corners. Most of these are from a great little blog called Simply Natural…and others are from Southern Living, which surprisingly (to me) has some really cute coastal living ideas. We have a friend of So’mace who snorkels for shells on the North Shore. I remember walking into her cozy little cottage for the first time and there were just thousands of the most beautiful shells – in jars, on shelves, all over! How fun to be surrounded by such a special collection…

Scientific Art

Posted by Isla on Jul 28, 2009 in Finds

We love to mix vintage with modern here at So’mace, as i know a lot of you do also. I always fall back to one site in particular for a little vintage inspiration, Vintage Print Gallery. They actually do have originals dating back to the 1600’s, as well as reproduction giclees. The group of scientist, botanists, naturalists, artists they pull from just amazes me. I love the thought of someone studying something so beautiful, and portraying it so beautifully, under such long, silent focus (that’s how i imagine them all in my mind anyway), as if there was all the time in the world…

Kaypee draws all his inspiration from the way he interprets nature and the environment around us, which is equally impressive in the way he turns it into art. I just wish he was able to feel as thought he had all the time in the world!

Anyway, how fun would it be to design a little “island” boys room around this series below by naturalist Georges Cuvier?
