Was reminiscing this weekend, not sure why but perhaps it’s been all the hype about Where the Wild Things Are?!
Enjoyed however trying to remember all the fun old stories i grew up with. Looking back, they seem very different from the childrens books i see all over today. These don’t seem quite so, i don’t know, light-hearted…kid friendly…naive in a way? But aren’t these illustrations just so inspiring? Most are fairly simple and leave so much freedom for imagination. The colors and lack of color are equally as amusing.
The harshest and most humorous of Origin stories (for little ones!)
Love these illustrations and the moral of the story too…
A Maine classic…although all in navy and white, the story and illustrations captured the imagination
I’ve carried these colors with my my entire life thus far!
Another Maine classic, such a sophisticated lady and scenery…
Very little color yet so intriguing and captivating
Didn’t realize we read so many Asian influenced books! My sister and i LOVED his name!
An all-time favorite, still love the illustrations to this day…check out this neat exhibit at the Morgan Library
Taschen does it again with The Temple of Flora, a beautiful book of reprints by botanist Robert Thornton, based on his original book printed in 1799. This is not a new book i know, but these prints are just beautiful. Below are some of my favorites.

I was at Barnes and Noble last weekend and found some really fun design books. We’re slowly trying to collect as many as we can for the store but one called ‘Mary Emmerling’s Beach Cottages’ was one of my favorites. I wish i had some images to prove it, hopefully we’ll have the book here at So’mace soon! I Googled her and found this little interview she did with GlamNest…just thought it would be fun to share with fellow beach lovers…
Happy Aloha Friday by the way!

JK: What do you love most about living in a beach cottage?
ME: I love the freshness of it: the ocean smells and breezes; the flowers and produce in the summer; and sunsets enjoyed with friends.
JK: What do you consider the essential elements of a beach house?
ME: I love slipcovers, white ironstone, blue and white fabrics, natural materials such as rattan and sisal, candles, and breezy curtains.
JK: I love the touches of humor in your decorating. How do you keep a room fun?
ME: Don’t take decorating too seriously and surround yourself with fun things—like beach balls, colorful jewelry, and family photos that make you smile. Also, look in your closet for unexpected decorating accessories; beach bags, straw hats, and sarongs add great color and style.
After reading about Renee Loux in the HiLuxury Green issue, i was totally blown away by what an amazing woman she came across as. I actually emailed her and told her how impressed i was with all she has done and to my total delight, she emailed me right back thanking me for my email! It’s these kinds of exchanges that happen a lot for us all here at So’mace and it’s such a fulfilling feeling when they do. We love it and appreciate it and hope to keep that kind of excitement and gratitude coming and going…

We’ve got an order in for Renee’s book so be sure to come by and check it out. We’re hoping to have some here in time for our Lifestyle Market, happening here at the store the last Sunday in June. You’ll be blown away by all Renee has researched, it’s an amazing resource for green living.
