Kaypee recently introduced me to the NEW awesome designs of Reyn Spooner. We both marveled at their online site, at the patterns and colors and fun cuts. I had always heard of Reyn’s here in Hawaii but it wasn’t until i visited their new showroom in the Sheraton Waikiki that i fully comprehended what they were doing.
In the mid 1950’s, Reyn McCullough and his wife, Ruth Spooner came together to form Reyn Spooner, selling the best in board shorts and aloha shirts. Together they transformed the traditional style of an aloha shirt, taking the popular “button down, half placket pullover silhouette” style that was popular with Brooks Brothers at the time, reversing the print inside out and reinventing it as the “Reyn Spooner Reverse Print Popover”, which was a much more classic, fitted, modern version of what was popular (long sentence i know!).

Their showroom today is a blast to walk through, it’s small and boutique-like but each print is fabulous, and truly complete eye candy all the way through! It’s always great to see a modern take on something traditional, which Kaypee relates to well as a designer also…

Home
This was a “house of the day” featured on the WSJ website a while back. Although the condo is a city condo, it breathes and evokes an essence of beach-ness don’t you think? I absolutely love the funkiness of its aesthetic – the pale blue walls mixed with darker blue floors (which i LOVE by the way, go gloss go!), the more contemporary kitchen mixed with Danish modern furnishings, worldly accents mixed with design classics…yet it all still feels so fresh airy and for sure lived in.
Check out the fun knobs in the bathroom too!

Kaypee Soh Art
Ooohhh la la! Kaypee just showed us these two new pieces he’s done for a project. Just LOVE them and can imagine them in a fun surf lounge/coffee shop type space (as well as a home of course!). It’s like Christmas every time a new piece pops out of the printer…

Minus the horrid granite and paneled cabinets, this is such a cute kitchen! A colored concrete countertop would have been my choice, keep it feeling rustic and aged with a little whimsey. And of course, simple Shaker style cabinetry but overall, the feel and warmth of the space is fabulous. I just love the brick floors and exposed beams and all the jars and hanging pots… The Wall Street Journal Real Estate section is my new obsession, so many fun homes and articles…check it out if you get a chance.
On a side note, I started the day with this image in mind, which led me to finding the kitchen…kind of fun to see what evolved from that original vision, such a similar feel…
